History
Lakeview Hospital is the second
oldest hospital in the state of Minnesota. Starting in a
two-story house in Stillwater, Lakeview Hospital began in 1880 by a
group of twelve women. Due to its successes, a new hospital
building was built at the corner of Greeley and Anderson Streets in
1892.
In 1958, Lakeview Memorial Hospital
Association was incorporated into a voluntary non-profit Minnesota
corporation. This association served as a vehicle to raise money
for the construction of a new hospital, which began in 1959 and was
completed in 1961. The new 67-bed hospital was a showpiece for
years as the first hospital in the United States to use a circular
design in its patient care units.
Advancing technologies became the
driving force in the 1980's, reducing the need for invasive surgeries
to diagnose medical problems. As larger healthcare systems and
HMO's began forming, Lakeview Hospital maintained its
independence. This brave, visionary decision remains in place
today.
Lakeview celebrated the grand
opening of a major addition in the 1990's. Today, Lakeview is a
98-bed facility. Lakeview Hospital is an investor and
assists with the management of High Pointe Surgery Center (Lake Elmo,
MN) and Boutwells Landing (Oak Park Heights, MN), a facility that
provides seniors with a full range of health and housing services.
Through continued community
involvement, visionary Board leadership, strong working relationships
with medical staff, and the commitment and support of local
foundations, Lakeview's mission to meet the needs and expectations of
the region continues to be met, now and into the future. |
